As of next Monday our little Chloe bear will be 3 months old and we will officially be out of the ” fourth trimester “… And honestly I could not be more excited.
When Chloe was born I had a hard time breast feeding her, I got mastitis twice and had to be on prescribed medication. The nurses told me repeatedly to breastfeed while on antibiotics but I just didn’t feel right about it. I then formula fed her for those 2 weeks. After the 2 weeks my milk supply dried up- I was devastated as all I wanted was to give my baby the best start possible. I felt judged for choosing formula, I tried everything from 18 pills of milk thistle a day to mothers milk tea to try to make my milk supply come back. My girlfriend even gave me her VERY expensive pump. As Chloe dropped weight I was forced to put her on formula once again. I cried for a solid 4 days and then sucked it up and did some research on formulas. Turns out the vast majority of formula available in Canada & the US are complete shit. I mean the first Ingredients were high fructose corn syrup, soy, palm oil and fake sugars. After looking into other European formulas, which were clean and close to breast milk or at least not full of soy & garbage sugars. I chose to go with Holle, a formula from Germany which is quite expensive and not available at the convince of a short drive to shoppers drug mart. I think its awful that more clean formula options aren’t available to us & families who cant afford the expensive costs of formula and not to mention the shipping prices that go with.
That being said it’s been brought to my attention that some of my wording may have offended some people which was never my intent . I simply am just trying to tell people that they have other options besides the ones your doctors are being paid to recommend to you. Holle & Hiip offer formulas for babies with allergies to dairy as well!
Whichever way you choose to feed your child is the best way- remember that.
Next struggle we faced was being so sleep deprived and sore after birth- that I would again, cry for days- i knew I would be tired and maybe a little bit sore but having a little human rely on you completely and not looking after yourself is a wicked combo!
few hundred more breakdowns I quickly learned to ask for help – I think we feel like we are expected to do it all or else feel judged and less than. Cook, clean house , fit back into those jeans immediately…. Let’s end that!! you know that saying ” it takes a village to raise a child” let’s bring that back.
I thought that I might have baby blues and everyone said – this will pass it’s just the fourth trimester it will get better!! Which thank you to all my mama friends for coaching me through what I think is harder than labour itself! It did get better! I love you all for all of your help and support. I promise to all my moms to be to help you and feed you as much as you did me!
I wrote this post to just be a little bit real with you all as I know I only post the ” highlight real” of Chloe’s little life, but believe me those first few months weren’t all sunshine and rainbows!!
I can now happily say I am sleeping at least 5 or 6 hours a night and sometimes even 9. I have learned that I need to take care of myself in order to take care of her. We look forward to all her little smiles and those nights that are really tough are always followed by 3 more amazing ones. Watching her change and learn everyday is the best gift. To all my mamas out there, this truly is the hardest, most rewarding job in life- you are all superwomen & you are so appreciated!!
