It is said that the average Canadian consumes a whopping 88 lbs of sugar a year… & my guess is that is not even on purpose! Sugar is in EVERYTHING these days. From breads too “healthy green drinks”. Among many young girls it has become almost trendy to eat junk food…from t-shirts decorated with pizzas and candy to floaties shaped as macarons and doughnuts… no actually that’s a thing….. Yeah that’s an actual cool food trend right now.
Lately I have found myself eating way to much sugar on the daily. I guess I let it slip by me thinking… ” oh its fine its a more natural sugar”. But the truth is raw honey, agave and coconut sugar, dates, maple syrup, raw cane sugar…are all sugar. They break down the same way in our bodies. Yes they a smarter option, as raw honey is an antifungal agent and maple syrup holds many amazing antioxidants. BUT they are all seen as sugar by our bods. Eaten in moderation these sugars are amazing & add just the right amount of sweet to our fav recipes ( any many on my blog ! ) …but when you eat them daily and find yourself constantly cravings sugars its time to cut them out completely.
After cutting all sugars out for about 2 weeks …try to make these types of natural sugars a treat! Once a week treat yourself to something delish that you look forward too but not a daily routine! You will not even want those oreos, cookie dough blizzards, doughnuts or slurpees….after 2 weeks. You will become addicted to a new high… health!
Cutting out sugar is NO easy task. Many relate sugar withdrawals to that of drug withdrawals. It has been said that sugar is just AS addicting as cocaine, as it gives us that “high” and then leaves us wanting more until eventually we are addicted. An over abundance can lead to all sorts of horrid things one of them is bad, itchy, acne ridden skin… the worst. Check out my detox mask for a perfect girls night in!
Please know that I am in NO way saying to cut out ALL sugar like fresh summer fruits that are rich in fibre and nutrients… I am talking about the added sugars that we consume.
Researchers point to studies that show that too much sugar (both in the form of natural sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup) not only makes us fat, it also wreaks havoc on our liver, mucks up our metabolism, impairs brain function, and may leave us susceptible to heart disease, diabetes, even cancer. Sugar provides fuel for those bad yucky cancer cells that we want to shrink & kill… this is why i love green smoothies so much! The high antioxidants kill off all the bad cells making us alkalized and happy. Sugar makes our bodies acidic and disease thrives in an acidic environment! Check out some alkalizing green smoothie recipes HERE. OH & believe me i’m not cutting out my prosecco, wine or champagne just moderating it to about every other weekend … you know for my health 😉 balance is key!
Here are some tips if you would like to reduce your sugar intake and keep it out of your life for good!
- Stop Buying Processed Foods
- Watch What Your Drinking – Wine, Champagne is all… sugar – HORRIBLE I KNOW
- Stop Adding Milk & Sweetened Almond/Soy Milk to Your Coffee
- Stop using sugar in coffee & tea – try stevia if needed
- Avoid Store-bought Juices & from Concentrate Coconut Water
- Make Your Own Salad Dressings
- Try more of my recipes out more often 😉
- Choose Whole, Fresh Fruit Over Juice, Dehydrated, or Other Fruit Products
- Avoid Flavored Yogurt
- Make Your Own Spaghetti Sauce & All Sauces
- Give Yourself A Quota For Sugar Each Day
- Give Yourself Rules About Dessert AKA I will NOT eat that if it’s not home baked & “clean”.
- Don’t Keep Treats In The House – This is a huge one for me!
- Out of Sight, Out of Mind – Get the treats out of eye sight
& for the other extreme! DO NOT & I repeat DO NOT resort to fake sugars . Recent studies show that these chemically modified sweeteners can damage the way your body naturally processes sugar, making you much more susceptible to overeating. Because of the increasing public health warnings, food companies are now using obscure names to hide these artificial sweeteners in their products. They go under names like Splenda, Sweet & Low , Sucralose, among many more!
I will be doing more posts on how to cut out sugar and how to make better options at the grocery store to come!
