Let’s take it back about to about 10 years ago. I was a high school student living the typical student life: pulling all nighter study sessions, partying on the weekends, sleeping in, eating whatever said “Microwave only” on the label. All terrible habits, none the less I had perfect skin! My Doctor suggested that I go on the glorified birth control pill to clear up any unsightly acne or painful periods ( all of which didn’t even have yet)…. I took her advice and went on “the pill,” as it’s called, with the promise of this magic pill totally changing my skin by regulating my hormones. Little did I know the struggle I would face 8 years later coming off of this “Pill”.
When I came off the birth control pill 8 years later I began to experience horrible side effects like cystic acne, weight gain/loss, mood swings etc. I now realize that the pill was regulating my hormones so much when I was younger that finally now when I went off of it my body couldn’t handle the hormone imbalance that my body was facing. I so regret going on the pill as young as I did and not letting my hormone levels adjust naturally, which is crucial for young women who are still developing, or whose bodies are still adjusting to puberty.
Worse even, was going through 2 + years of trying to cover up this unsightly cystic acne. I would use topical creams full of intense chemicals & makeup full of harmful chemicals, all to have the breakouts come back even worse.
It was not until my time as a student at the Academy of Culinary Nutrition where I learned and applied the power of healing foods and the effect and connection between my meals, my actions, my emotions, my lifestyle and my looks, until I started exploring nutrition and wellness and their connection to beauty itself. Feeling a new sense on life, with clear skin….I will share the top 3 foods to heal your skin & prevent acne…naturally!
Acne-Fighting Food # 1 : Fennel
Do not avoid this powerful healing food, full of fiber, potassium, folate, vitamin C, vitamin B-6 and phytonutrient content, Most issues with our skin actually being in our digestive systems .Fennel helps to enhance your digestion while also preventing the swelling of your skin. I love it on salads diced up or even juiced into morning green juices!
Acne- Fighting Food # 2: Wild Salmon
Salmon is considered to be one of the best source of omega 3 fatty acids. These fatty acids ensure that your skin glows and softens as desired. This is due to the fact that they prevent skin inflammation. Other foods that will provide you with omega 3 fatty acids include: seeds, mackerel, sardines and nuts.
Acne – Fighting Food # 3: Turmeric
Turmeric has long been used as a powerful anti-inflammatory in both the Chinese and Indian systems of medicine. Turmeric was traditionally called “Indian saffron” because of its deep yellow-orange color and has been used throughout history as a condiment, healing remedy and textile dye. Turmeric fights inflammation and brightens the appearance of the skin. It also acts as a natural remedy against internal bacteria and toxins that lead to acne. I love adding the spice to soups, smoothies and even making turmeric healing tea which I will feature in an upcoming blog post!
